Rajapakse Creates another “Ghost”

President Rajapakse and the United People’s Alliance have created a new “ghost” to use in the April 2010 general election campaign.

The ruling party is trying to use the recent statement issued by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to boost the Sinhala nationalism. UN Secretary General issued a statement saying that he is planning on appointing a team of experts to advise him on the accountability of Sri Lankan government forces and the LTTE for various alleged violations of international human rights and humanitarian law.

In all the previous elections, the capitalist Sri Lankan government politicians created a “ghost” to arouse Sinhala nationalistic feelings so that they can garner votes especially from the Sinhala rural masses. In this election, the Rajapakse government deliberately uses UN Secretary General’s statement to boost Sinhala nationalistic feelings and prevent the problems faced by the internally displaced Tamil people in the north of Sri Lanka from surfacing. On the other hand Rajapakse government is trying to discontinue Ban Ki-Moons effort to appoint this committee to derail the world opinion on the actual situation of internally displaced Tamil people even after the war is over.

The party does not believe that the international bodies such as the UN have the ability to make a real inquiry into the atrocities committed mainly by the Sri Lankan government forces during the war against the LTTE in 2009 or previous years. It is only the organized working class movement in Sri Lanka and world wide can conduct a true inquiry into the events taken place in the north and east during past several years. (USP)
